SHSAA basketball conferences results in regional spots earned, provincial goal in sight.

After conference spots captured, Unity, Wilkie, Macklin and Kerrobert basketball teams advance to regional playdowns.

UNITY — High School basketball teams continue to compete for a spot in Sask. High School Athletic Association Hoopla provincial championships taking place March 24-25.

The road for teams started with conference playoffs March 11 and girls’ teams from Wilkie, Unity and Macklin all move on to regional playdowns taking place March 17.

“We won conferences. It was really exciting to keep the positive momentum from our tournament going.” says Unity girls’ coach Aaron Melnyk.

“We defeated the defending provincial champions – St. Walburg, 63 – 60.”

Unity girls will compete at Maple Creek for a chance to earn a provincial berth.

McLurg coach, Mark Myszczyszyn, says that the weather system played a factor on their conference weekend with the Herbert game being cancelled forcing McLurg to wait until 5 p.m. to play their game.

“The girls played well and showed great skill and effort and I believe we can improve on how we played,” Myszczyszyn says.

“We lost the game by one point and had the ball in their zone when the clock expired. The game officials did a great job. Hopefully, we will redeem ourselves this weekend at regionals.”

Wilkie girls, being ranked No. 2 in the province, were awarded host site for regional competition. Teams attending will be Maidstone, Norquay and Shellbrook with the first game Friday at 6 p.m. and the team is hoping to see a full house of McLurg supporters.

Kerrobert girls moved straight to regionals as they are categorized as a 1A school. The girls’ team will play in Lake Lenore while the boys will compete at Ecole Canadienne.

Macklin girls will compete at regionals at Ecole Laval

Unity boys also advanced from their conference to regional playdowns, and they were awarded hosting duties for the regional competition.

Regional winners advance to the provincial championship March 24-25.
