Residents of Parkview Place in Unity enjoyed a sweet afternoon on Feb. 14. As part of the special event, wedding gowns hung throughout the dining room area representing bridal wear from multiple generations. Carrie Boser's family had three generations of gowns on display as part of this feature. Residents were treated to live music and a number of treats and sweets courtesy of local businesses and people.
Our Drug Store had delivered a rose bowl for each lady, purchased from the Unity Kin Club Telemiracle flower fundraiser, as well as brought chocolates for each of the gentlemen residents. Delta Coop delivered goodie bags along with hand made Valentine's cards created by local school children. Guests enjoyed tea and treats as well as live music performance by Carolyn Kopp.
Residents of Parkview Place were asked to share their sweet stories of their own love stories as part of the Valentine's Day celebrations. As these love stories were shared, it was clear that reliving these special memories had their eyes lighting up speaking to the love that they felt. We are happy to share them with you.
Freda and Andy. They were 19 or 20 and she had another boyfriend at the time. A girlfriend introduced them and they went for coffee at a café and Freda says it was love at first sight. A year and a half later, he proposed at a friend’s place and she was shocked. They were soon married in Innisfail in the pastor’s house. Freda and Andy were married for 47 years
Angela and Fred. They met at a dance in Unity and she knew of him a little. They followed that meeting with a New Years Dance date and the rest, shall we say is history. Angela and Fred were married-44 years.
Eileen and Joe. She was babysitting and a mother’s helper in Biggar. He came to find her in Sonningdale and stopped at the farm to find out where she lived. When she was teaching in Rocky Mountain House, he came to visit on weekends and said, “You know, we’re going to have to get married.” He proposed at a family birthday. Eileen and Joe were married 30 years.
Virginia and Peter. They went to a movie together and they danced together but Virginia did not know he was interested. He proposed at her house at a picnic, although they had talked about it first. At one time he gave Virginia a mother’s day card but didn’t sign it, Virginia still has that card. Virginia and Peter were married for a remarkable 65 years.
Iris and Roy. She was teaching at Tramping Lake during the bad winter of 1955. She went to a dance at Broadacres and met Roy there. Her took her back to Tramping Lake and stopped at the hotel where a school board member could get her back to the teacherage. Iris taught in Broadacres in 1956 and Roy proposed at the Christmas concert that year. They married on Aug. 14, 1957 in Uranium City where Iris’ parents were. Iris and Roy were married 31 years.
Evelyn and West. She was 19, while he was older. They were in the same rooming house above Our Drug Store. Evelyn went to the theatre and West came to sit beside her. They soon started dating and after about eight months, West proposed while out for a drive. They had a quiet wedding at an aunt’s house on the farm. Evelyn and West were married 22 years.
Mary and James. They were both 18. Mary was in training to be a nurse and he was a university student. James’ parents were friends of hers. James’ brothers were nervous as they worried Mary might say no when he proposed. James proposed on a date and he met her parents after the proposal. After a two year engagement, they married. Mary says he was a very loving husband and father. Mary and James (Jim) were married 46 years.
Family members of residents in Parkview Place continue to be grateful for those staff who organize events and activities that help engage their residents in special occasions and social activity.
