UNITY - The definition of auxiliary is to provide supplementary or additional help and support. A small group of people in Unity continue to commit to fundraising for the purpose of providing funds for the purchase of replacement or up-to-date equipment that assists the health care team at Unity's hospital. The Unity Health Care Auxiliary motto is “To provide Care and Comfort to residents of Unity and Area that at utilizing patient/resident services in either our Acute Care or Long Term Care Facility”.
Recently the auxiliary has been able to continue doing just that. This past summer, six more patient lifts have been installed in long-term care. These lifts are an ongoing project that the Health Care Auxiliary has been working on; with the goal to have all LTC resident rooms equipped with a lift. These lifts assist in aiding residents to be helped out of bed, so they are given the opportunity to sit in chairs to add variety to their day. These lifts also help care aids and nurses save injury in lifting residents.
The auxiliary has also purchased a much-needed bladder scanner and cart. The new scanner will replace the old one that had failed over a year ago. The scanner will be used in both acute and LTC.
The combined cost of both of these purchases was over $41,000.00.
These donations to the Unity and District Health Centre have been made in the auxiliary name, but would not be possible without the generous donations of many dedicated people of our community. Fundraising efforts have been limited these last two years, but the group says they feel lucky to have donations made via many dedicated efforts.
The UHCA has received memorial donations honouring family friends or loved ones. The annual Christmas greeting board generates income for the community organization as well. Community business, Masterhand Signs, graciously creates the nameplates each year for the board for free and volunteers put them in place.
A spokesperson for Unity's hospital auxiliary tells the Press-Herald / SASKTODAY.ca, "We are so appreciative of the support we receive from the area and our rural municipalities. Through their commitment, we are able to continue to work in assisting our small hospital. Donor’s Choice annual appeal has also generated a significant amount of funding this year."
"Most recently we were recipients of The Royal Purple distribution of their reserve funds before dissolving their club. It is through continued donations large and small that our organization can work with Unity Hospital to assist in providing the much-needed necessities in our hospital and long-term care."
