Wilkie and Unity off to provincial basketball championships

Wilkie girls' and Unity boys' and girls' teams all captured regional gold

UNITY — It may be NCAA March madness basketball on television, but school teams were providing equally thrilling basketball excitement on home courts as they vied for regional titles that would send them to Sask. High School Athletics Association provincial Hoopla basketball championships March 25 weekend.

Macklin girls were the lone team on the road and, after dropping their first game, would have to play on the consolation side, unable to earn a provincial berth.

McLurg girls earned the right to host regionals and had a decided opening victory sending them to the A final. In the 2A girls' basketball division, Mclurg defeated Asquith 83-48 sending them to regional final against Hepburn. They won the final earning a regional gold medal and have now earned a spot at SHSAA provincial basketball March 25-26, location to be announced.

UCHS girls, in the 3A girls' division regional playdowns, had a decided defeat of 79-28 over Riverview and would face off against Creighton for the regional final.

UCHS boys also soundly defeated their opposition in the opening game beating PACI, Prince Albert Collegiate Institute 71-32 sending them to the regional final against Kindersley. Another strong game by the Warriors and they captured regional gold thus earning them a spot at upcoming SHSAA provincial boys' basketball championships, location to be announced, March 25-26.

For the first time in more than two decades, rural schools in 1A – 4A divisions will have the opportunity to host provincial basketball and may include the communities of Wilkie and Unity, with location announcements made March 24.
