Wilkie senior boys conference champs, regional runners-up at home

2A senior boys' conferences held in Wilkie, Broncs advancing to provincials.

McLurg High School in Wilkie hosted 2A senior boys’ conferences Nov. 10 and 11. The tournament was held in round robin fashion.

The Wilkie boys won all four of their games handily, defeating Lashburn, Neilburg, Luseland and Chief Poundmaker, all in two-set games, to emerge as conference champions.

The stage and sidelines at McLurg were filled with spectators again Nov. 18 as the boys, coached by Becki Schell and Andrea Roeiens, welcomed teams from Canoe Lake, Turtleford, Makwa, Ile-a-la-Cross and Lashburn to regionals.

The Broncs sailed through their preliminary games, and then met Lashburn in the semifinal. They won that game handily, in two sets. Wilkie and Makwa played each other in the final, with Makwa coming off the court as regional champions. As runners-up, however, Wilke too advances to provincials, being held Nov. 24 and 25 at Ponteix.

Unity to host 3A boys’ provincials

In boys’ 3A volleyball, the Unity Warriors were at Biggar for conference weekend. In a smaller conference tournament than the one at Wilkie, the Warriors won both of their round robin games to claim the championship and advance to regionals.

Because they will be hosting provincials Nov. 25 and 26, the Unity Composite High School senior boys were guaranteed a spot in the provincial 3A volleyball tournament. However, knowing that playing at provincials would be sweeter if they earned their way there, the boys put up a spirited effort at Assiniboia Nov. 18.

The Warriors swept through preliminary play and semi-finals, winning all three games in straight sets of two. Playing against host Assiniboia in the championship game was a little tougher however, and the Unity boys had to settle for being regional runners-up, but that still qualifies them for provincials on their own merit.

Ten teams will be in Unity this weekend for the provincial championship tournament. Opening ceremonies will take place at 10:45 a.m., Nov. 24, and the Warriors play at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The Unity boys’ last round robin game is at 10 a.m., Nov. 25, with tournament playoffs beginning at 12:30 p.m. The gold medal game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Spectators are welcome at all games.

Ken Parker coaches the senior Warriors, and girls’ coach Vicki Orobko will be the tournament commissioner. Ryan Kobelsky with Living Sky School Division head office and UCHS teacher Brittany Arsenault will livestream the games.

Looking forward to the event, Parker said, “It will be a busy week of preparation. Many thanks to the army of volunteers and to the UCHS staff for once again putting up with my desire to host these events.”
