Charlotte Ruth Sutherland, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on May 17, 2025, at 91 years of age. Ruth grew up in Donavon, Saskatchewan with her sisters Shirley, Arlene and Carol, and loving parents Arnold and Robina Anderson. Her childhood on the family farm was filled with music, friendships, academics, sports, church activities and many social events with family and friends.

Ruth graduated from High School and attended the University of Saskatchewan, earning a Bachelor of Education in 1955. She was very active in the university community, earning an honour ring for SRC and was the sports reporter for the campus newspaper, The Sheaf. Her teaching career soon took her to Moose Jaw, where she married Stuart Sutherland, in 1958. Ruth had a long and fulfilling career teaching at high schools in Moose Jaw and touched the lives of many students along the way.

Ruth also achieved her ARCT in piano and was a piano teacher for several years. Stuart and Ruth attended Zion United Church, which played an important role in their lives in Moose Jaw. Ruth sang in the Church Choir, co-founded and directed the Handbell Choir, was the assistant organist, was Chair of the Church Council, President of the UCW and the list goes on. Her love of learning had her enrolled in the Graduate Studies Program at the University of Regina. Ruth also began violin lessons at the Conservatory of Regina later in life and enjoyed many years of performances and friendships.

She was a devoted member of the Moose Jaw PEO Chapter and also enjoyed playing Bridge in her Moose Jaw and Saskatoon homes. We also can’t forget her dedication to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. A busy family life included time at the cottage, family gatherings, boating, and extensive travel at home and abroad. Ruth and Stuart loved to host friend and family events, no matter the occasion. She took great pride in her family and a highlight of her life has always been her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Ruth is predeceased by her husband Stuart, son-in-law Jonathan Sargent and grandson Greg and sister Shirley Elliott. She is survived by: her son Hugh (Diann) and their children Sean (Tessa), Camilla (Mike) and Callum (Jess) and great grandchildren Rylan, Lucas, Everett, Zoey, and Elayna; daughter Leanne and children Tyrell (Morgana) and Graham (Brady); sisters Arlene Bray and Carol Downton; and many nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved.

A celebration of life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of Ruth’s chosen charities: Zion United Church, McClure United Church, PEO Canada, Lung Saskatchewan, or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
