USask presidents, past and present, square off over EDI policy

Former president suggests EDI program is propaganda module; current president defends it.

Current president of the University of Saskatchewan, Peter Stoicheff, and a former president, Peter MacKinnon.

SASKATOON - As Peter Stoicheff enters his final year of a decade at the helm of the University of Saskatchewan, he is squaring off against a predecessor who has written a scathing op-ed accusing the university of being on an ideological mission.

Calling out Peter MacKinnon, who served as president of the university from 1999 to 2012, Stoicheff said an op-ed by the former president contains accusations that are serious and misguided.

MacKinnon suggested the EDI policy at USask is a propaganda module in which scholarly expertise and balance will not be found.

Stoicheff writes, “Our university’s goal, stated in our 2020 EDI Policy, is to ‘create and nurture a diverse and inclusive university community.’ We aspire to be a place that welcomes gender and sexual diversity, physical diversity, philosophical and political diversity, diversity of age, and more. I encourage members of the university community to attend a convocation ceremony where that diversity is celebrated and on vivid display.”
