The Canadian Red Cross says people can join as volunteers to help evacuees.

REGINA — As many people in Saskatchewan have been affected by the wildfires, the Canadian Red Cross is playing a big role in getting people the help they need.

As of Tuesday, roughly 10,000 people in Sask. have been registered with the organization.

“We've helped provide them with reception and information, emergency accommodations, [and shelter] from [places like] hotel spaces,” said Luc Mullinder, vice president of  Canadian Red Cross Sask.

Mullinder said this wildfire season has already been bigger than last year's, even though it's only June.

With more frequent wildfires, “it's really sort of shifted the way we plan for these things and the way [the] community also has to plan and react," he said

He also stressed the importance of knowing where resources are available.

“How fast can we get that support to communities [is the key].“

Some evacuees have started returning home, including those from the Pelican Narrows and  Weyakwin areas.

Mullinder said the Canadian Red Cross is collaborating with communities to ensure people can get transportation back home.

As for anyone interested in helping evacuees, Mullinder said there’s a bunch of availability for volunteers.

People can also help out by donating to the Canadian Red Cross. Currently, every dollar donated to the organization is matched by the Canadian Government.
