La Ronge man charged with arson in Ditch 2 fire

Fire investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency determined the wildfire was human-caused and Waskesiu RCMP began a criminal investigation.

WEYAKWIN — A man charged with starting the wildfire known as the Ditch 2 fire, appeared in Saskatoon Provincial Court Thursday.

Saskatchewan RCMP say 29-year-old Jason Halkett from La Ronge was charged with one count, arson – damage to property, Section 434, Criminal Code. He was arrested in Saskatoon on Aug. 27, by the Saskatoon Police Service.

On May 26, a fire started in the Weyakwin area. Fire investigators with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency began investigating the cause and origin of the fire, known as the Ditch 2 fire, which spread and caused structure damage as well as the evacuation of several communities. It was determined the wildfire was human-caused and Waskesiu RCMP began a criminal investigation.
