SASKATOON - Opposition New Democrats are calling on the provincial government to immediately eliminate the provincial sales tax on construction labour costs to rebuild homes, cabins, and commercial buildings that were lost due to wildfires.
Opposition Leader Carla Beck and Cumberland MLA and critic for Northern Affairs Jordan McPhail called for the relief at a media availability in Saskatoon Friday. According to an NDP release, their proposed PST exemption would apply to construction labour costs associated with reconstruction in communities including Denare Beach, East Trout Lake, Sucker River and elsewhere in the North.
“This is about helping the North get back on its feet after one of the most devastating wildfire seasons in our province’s history,” said Beck in a news release.
“Families have lost homes, business owners have lost livelihoods, and entire communities are facing the long road of rebuilding. They’re asking for help and removing the PST on construction labour is a simple step the Sask. Party can take to rebuild the North.”
“This should not be a partisan position — it’s simply the right thing to do,” said McPhail in a statement.
“My constituents have felt abandoned by the Sask. Party during one of the hardest moments of their lives. This is one step they can take right here and right now to help rebuild after so much heartbreaking loss.”
In a statement, the government provided this response:
“Our government remains committed to supporting Northern communities as they work through the challenges of this difficult wildfire season. PST revenues help fund services in health care, education and social services, as well as programs such as municipal revenue sharing and infrastructure investments that communities rely on. Our government is always looking for ways to ways to stimulate the economy and encourage growth, another critical component in providing these important services and supporting Saskatchewan residents in need.”
