Update: New possible tornado alert issued

Conditions have been favourable for Thursday's thunderstorms to produce tornadoes.

REGINA - Update 2: SaskAlert says at 9:19 p.m. CST, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.

The following localities are included in the warning: Wynyard, Elfros, Foam Lake, Ituna, Lestock, Wishart, Punnichy, Raymore, Balcarres, Abernethy and Peepeekisis Reserve. Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is possibly producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

  • R.M. of Kellross including Kelliher and Lestock (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Ituna Bon Accord including Ituna and Hubbard

Earlier updates: SaskAlert says that at 6:57 p.m. the tornado alert for the following areas has been cancelled.

  • R.M. of Usborne including Lanigan Drake and Guernsey
  • R.M. of Viscount including Viscount and Plunkett (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Blucher including Allan Clavet Bradwell and Elstow (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Dundurn including Dundurn and Blackstrap Prov. Park (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Colonsay including Colonsay and Meacham (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Lost River including South Allan and the Allan Hills (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Morris including Watrous Young and Zelma (cancelled)

SaskAlert says that at 6:14 p.m. CST, Environment Canada says tornadoes are no longer expected in the region.

  • R.M. of Lajord including Lajord Kronau and Riceton (cancelled)

SaskAlert says that at 5:46 p.m. CST, the tornado alert for the following areas is cancelled.

  • R.M. of Enniskillen including Oxbow and Northgate (cancelled)
  • R.M. of Mount Pleasant including Carnduff (cancelled)

Previous post: Environment Canada has issued a tornado warning for southeast Saskatchewan.

The tornado is associated with a storm system just east of Estevan and west of Alameda. Affected areas include: 

  • R.M. of Browning including Lampman
  • R.M. of Coalfields including Bienfait and North Portal.

According to the latest statement just issued:

"At 4:35 p.m. CST, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm that is possibly producing a tornado. Damaging winds, large hail and locally intense rainfall are also possible.

"This thunderstorm is between Hirsch and Frobisher and is moving southeast and 50 km/h.

"Golf ball sized hail also possible.

"This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.

"Tornado warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing tornadoes.."

Those in the area are urged to take cover and find a basement immediately.

As well, a tornado watch remains in effect for a wide chunk of eastern Saskatchewan from around the Yorkton area to the U.S. border.  

Environment Canada says a "low pressure system is moving into Southeast Saskatchewan which will trigger severe thunderstorms this afternoon. These severe thunderstorms will then move into Southwest Manitoba by the early evening.

"Conditions are favourable for these severe thunderstorms to produce tornadoes. Large hail up to 6 cm, wind gusts to 110 km/h, and heavy rain are also likely."
