REGINA - Students at Johnson Collegiate will have temporary fare-free transit come fall.

A motion passed by city council will implement a fare-free transit pilot project at the school starting Sept. 2nd and lasting until Dec 31st.

High schoolers in Regina had pushed for fare-free transit for years, calling it a benefit to access work, recreational activities and more.

City administration recommended an alternative option to give all Regina students in Grade 9 who are 13 by Sept. 2nd fare-free transit, but that was defeated by executive committee last week.

The pilot project is expected to cost roughly $86,000, which includes adding an additional bus along Route 9 - Parkridge.

Administration previously said this option would put the city over budget heading into 2026.

There’s a possibility Regina Public Schools could provide cost-sharing for the project, but that decision hasn’t been made yet.

During the pilot project, the city will collect data from Regina Public Schools and Regina Catholic School for overall ridership, attendance records, and more

The results of the pilot project will be shared with the executive committee in fall 2026.
