REGINA - City council has approved a motion for administration to further look into finding $1.55 million, equal to a 0.5 per cent mill rate in savings for the 2025 budget.
Council tasked administration to find savings after passing a motion during budget deliberations.
Last week, a report came back in front of executive committee, detailing eight areas city workers found viable savings.
These included cancelling popular Christmas event Light the Lights, reducing downtown public washroom operations, cutting city facility upgrades and more.
Many councillors took issue with the cuts.
Sarah Turnbull (Ward 5) said she doesn’t want cuts to washroom operations, stating, "no one wants to go into an unkept washroom."
Meanwhile, Mayor Chad Bachynski said he personally didn’t want to see the cancellation of Light the Lights.
With this in mind, David Froh (Ward 3) introduced a motion directing city administration to lay out "a menu of expenditure reduction options."
Little debate was made, as all city councillors were in favour of the motion.
City administration will report back with potential cuts at the May 21st city council meeting.
