Two Regina men face firearms charges after traffic stop

REGINA — Two men are facing multiple firearms-related charges after a traffic stop Saturday morning that led to the discovery of a loaded weapon.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Aug. 30, patrol officers on the ground were working with the Aerial Support Unit (ASU) investigating a series of break and enters in the 800 block of Athol Street. During the investigation, ASU officers observed a vehicle leaving the area where a male matching the description of the break and enter suspect was last seen. 

Patrol ground units initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and one of the two male passengers exited the vehicle and fled on foot. The Regina Police Service (RPS) Canine Unit tracked the suspect and found him hiding behind a large fence. The suspect ignored police commands to stop, once again running away from the area. He was arrested a short distance later by patrol officers.

The second suspect remained at the scene and was arrested without further incident. The two males were not found to be responsible for the break and enters, however, a search of the vehicle resulted in several items being seized, including a loaded sawed-off rifle, a loaded magazine, various quantities of illicit drugs, and alcohol.

Dylan Poorman, 27, is charged with possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to a prohibition order, careless storage of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a vehicle, and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm.

Justin McKay, 39, is charged with three counts of possession of a firearm contrary to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition contrary to prohibition order, careless storage of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm when unauthorized, possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, resisting arrest, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition in a vehicle.

Both McKay and Poorman appeared in Regina Provincial Court on Sept. 2.
