University of Regina welcomes new students with move-in day

The University of Regina is expecting over 500 students to move into their dorms on Thursday.

REGINA — It’s an emotional and exciting new chapter for many as new students at the University of Regina (U of R) move onto campus today.

The U of R is expecting more than 500 new and returning students to move into residence today.

“We have volunteers from staff to students coming together to make sure that they have the best experience possible,” said Bryan Wilson, manager of housing services at the U of R.

About 250 students and staff are helping with directions, unloading items, answering questions and more.

Wilson said the university’s effort on move-in day reflects its passion for supporting students.

“We want people to take away a lot of positivity from their time here. We want to help them engage and meet new folks.”

“It's been a smooth process for me. They've been doing it for so long [so] they got it figured out,” said Kaynen Newton, a new U of R student studying engineering.

Newton, who is moving from eastern Saskatchewan, said this will be his first time away from home.

“It's [about] starting something new. [I’ve] been in the same town for my whole life. So it's good to get out and see other places.”

While Newton is sad to leave home, he said his parents have been more emotional about the departure.

Chloe Baron, another new student from Saskatoon, is studying film production. She chose the U of R for its four-year program and said she’s excited to make a career in film industry.

To welcome students, the U of R is hosting fall orientation on Friday and a welcome weekend on Saturday and Sunday, which includes several activities.

Overall, the university expects about 1,100 students to move into residence over the next few days.

Wilson noted there are still dorms available, and anyone interested can check the university’s website.

Classes for the fall semester begin Sept. 2.
