Canada's most wanted in 2022 Saskatoon murder arrested in Montreal

Jonathan Ouellet-Gendron was captured trying to re-enter Canada.

MONTREAL – Jonathan Ouellet-Gendron, one of Canada’s most wanted fugitives in connection with the 2022 Saskatoon murder of Brandon Baxandall, has been arrested at the Montreal-Trudeau Airport.

Quebec Provincial Police say Ouellet-Gendron was arrested by the Canada Border Services Agency, Mascouche Major Crime Investigation Division and the Sûreté du Québec Airport Unit as he was trying to re-enter Canada on Saturday.

Ouellet-Gendron is expected to appear in a Montreal courthouse Sunday, say Quebec police.

According to Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) Ouellet-Gendron is wanted in connection to Baxandall’s homicide on May 19, 2022, in the 700 block of Melrose Avenue.

Members of SPS Major Crime, Serious Assault and Forensic Identification Sections started investigating after they received reports around 4:30 p.m. on May 19. 2022, of shots fired in the area of 100 block of Main Street East. When they arrived, they found an injured man.

Shortly after, police received more calls about shots fired in the 700 block of Melrose Avenue and found another injured man. When police arrived at Melrose Avenue they found Baxandall deceased behind an apartment building.

In May 2022, police charged Ouellet-Gendron, then 33, with first-degree murder and released his photo to the public asking for help locating him.

In 2023, Ouellet-Gendron was placed on Canada’s top 25 most wanted fugitive list, taking the 10th spot on the BOLO Program. It was the first time the Saskatoon Police Service had partnered with the BOLO Program in an effort to apprehend a fugitive.

Saskatoon police also charged Mohamed Abdula Ali with first-degree murder in Baxandall’s death. Last year, Ali was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter.

Gofundme for victim's family

Baxandall’s aunt started a gofundme page to help raise money to set up a trust fund for Baxandall's children.

“Brandon did not have a life insurance policy and has left behind Tiffanni and their two children, Emersen and Fraeya,” Jamie Baxandall-Heidt posted on gofundme.

So far, $7,655 has been raised of the $30,000 goal.
