SASKATOON—The sound of the Saskatoon Fire Department trucks and paramedic ambulance broke the silence of Thursday night, July 17, to respond to a structure fire in the 800 Block of Confederation Drive.
The incident was reported to SPS dispatch at 11:01 p.m., with crews from Fire Station 2, located on Diefenbaker Drive, being the closest to respond to the multi-unit apartment fire.
Firefighters, upon arrival at the scene, saw black smoke coming from the balcony on the second floor of the apartment building. Crews advanced hose lines to begin an interior attack and blasted the structure with water to start containing the fire.
Another team entered the building to assist with the evacuation of the tenants and to confirm that no occupants were left behind in the unit that was on fire. There were no injuries reported either of civilians or fire crews.
Once the fire was brought under control and completely extinguished, firefighters ventilated the apartment building to remove smoke. Then they tested the air quality inside the structure before allowing residents to return to their respective units.
A fire investigator remained on the scene after firefighters ensured it was safe to conduct an examination to identify the cause, origin, and estimate the extent of the damage.
