Two 50-year-old Scots Pines inspire the naming of neighborhood

Saskatoon's Evergreen is one of Saskatoon's newer neighborhoods, still in development stages.

SASKATOON — Trees that have been around for generations are said to serve as symbols of wisdom, stability and endurance. These trees also emphasize their importance in creating a sustainable future, with the value of the tree measured not by the shade it provides to the planter, but to generations to come.

Saskatoon’s Evergreen neighbourhood is said to be named for two 50-year-old Scots Pines that were incorporated into the layout of one of the city’s newer neighbourhoods. These trees were originally planted by the Sutherland Forest Nursery Station.

Located on the eastern edge of Saskatoon, the words “dynamic” and “flourishing” are often used to describe this emerging Bridge City community.

SaskToday spoke with a newly retired couple who moved from small-town Saskatchewan and chose Evergreen as their new home.

Rob and Deanna say, “Our reason for choosing Evergreen - North Ridge was building townhomes with walkout basements. When we moved from small town Saskatchewan, we were wondering how we would adjust from farm life into the city. Luckily, we stumbled onto Evergreen.”

The couple adds, “We love living here because we can walk a beautiful path (five km round trip) to the Saskatoon Forestry Farm and Zoo. I visit the gardens there regularly and can enjoy roses, lilies and peonies as they blossom throughout the summer months. I have a season pass to the zoo and take my granddaughter to see the animals and enjoy the phenomenal playground. We have e-bikes and we enjoy the tranquil beauty and wildlife of the Northeast Swale. It's hard to believe we are within city limits. Our townhome is on a small street and I am so happy our neighbours have become our friends. We love Saskatoon and we love Evergreen.”

Diverse housing options are one of the neighbourhood’s attraction factors, offering a blend of residential homes, townhouses and condo units to accommodate a variety of lifestyles.

Like many Saskatoon neighbourhoods, Evergreen is known for its green spaces and trails. Expansive parks and walking paths provide residents and visitors with opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities while connecting with nature.

Dining, entertainment and shopping opportunities are another draw for the community.

Although still under construction within the University Heights Suburban Development area, Evergreen has already attracted many residents with its amenities and features.

Constructed around the village centre and a larger district village, the subdivision was created in 2010 and is planned to be built in seven phases. Evergreen will also be the first large-scale installation of LED street lights by Saskatoon Light and Power.

The neighbourhood is separated from surrounding developments to the south by greenbelts provided by University of Saskatchewan agricultural land holdings and the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo.

The communities of Evergreen and Aspen Ridge share a community association that works to provide benefits for residents. More information can be found on the group’s social media pages and website
