Assiniboia Park readies for ‘High School Musical Jr.’ production

First musical at APES in two years to be staged June 1-2

WEYBURN – Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6 at Assiniboia Park Elementary School are excited as they have been preparing to stage “High School Musical Jr.”, their first production in two years.

“We have students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 that are involved in this musical. It has been so much fun to be able to come together again and sing and dance and just put on an awesome show,” said director and music teacher Kendra Gonczy.

The performance show times are Wednesday and Thursday, June 1 and 2, at 7 p.m. in the APES gym. There will be a silver collection collected at the door as well.

"High School Musical Jr." is a fun, upbeat musical that takes place in a high school. It is a story about Troy Bolton (played by Daxon Doud and Adler Tenold), who is the star athlete at a small-town high school, falls for nerdy beauty, Gabriella Montez (Alyssa Kerr) at a holiday karaoke party.

When they return to school, Troy and Gabriella audition for the upcoming school musical. Meanwhile, the jealous Sharpay Evans (Jacey Kot) and her brother Ryan (Shane Bumstead) conspires to squelch their chances.

The two must struggle to make it to auditions while also meeting their existing obligations to the basketball team, and the academic decathlon team.

“You won't want to miss this show. There are many songs you will recognize such as ‘Stick to the Status Quo’, ‘We're All in This Together’, ‘Breaking Free’ and so much more,” said Gonczy.

Others in the cast include the basketball team, comprised of Maddox Mohan, Steele Ozmun and Keanan Palomares.

The brainiacs, led by Sophie Pollock, are Dakota Cassagnette, Karver Flores and Manya Patel, and Ms. Darbus, the fabulous drama teacher, is shared by Memphys Runge and Ellie Dillon.

Coach Bolton is played by Elijah Tronson, and Kelsi Nielsen is played by Rahima Siddiqui.
