Assault charges made, toddler in critical condition

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of September 26 to October 2:

During this reporting period the Weyburn Police Service received a total of 99 calls for service.

* At approximately 7:45 p.m. on October 1, a three year old male child was rushed to the Weyburn General Hospital with serious injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries the child was transported to the Regina General Hospital by the Regina Neo-Natal Transport Team where the child underwent emergency surgery. The child remains in hospital with life threatening injuries.

*The Weyburn Police Service has now arrested and charged 32 year old Andrew Harper of Weyburn with one count of Aggravated Assault. Mr. Harper is known to the victim and the family. The assault happened in the victim's home. This appears to be an isolated incident involving this one child. As of press time the victim was still listed in critical condition and remains in the Regina General Hospital. The investigation is ongoing.

*Police responded to six commercial and four residential alarms during the reporting period.

*On both September 29 and October 1, police addressed several fight complaints at local bars. Several people were arrested and two were charged under the local fighting bylaw.

*On September 28, police attended a motor vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer unit striking a light standard. The matter is under investigation.

*Police were called to a complaint of a theft of motor vehicle from a compound. A young person was arrested and charged with three counts of mischief and one count of theft.

*Police were called to a local drive thru restaurant for a theft report. The matter was resolved.

*On September 26, police responded to a domestic dispute outside of an apartment complex. A male was arrested for drunk in public and outstanding warrants.

*As a result of recent vandalism in the city, police members spoke to students at local schools regarding this problem. Anyone with information regarding the recent rash of broken windows are encouraged to call Crime Stoppers or the Police Service.
