Long time Weyburn resident Winston Bailey was elected to Weyburn City council during Wednesday's civic election due to an opening left by former councilman Dave Craigen who left due to health reasons.

The results saw Bailey take top spot with 530 votes. Melanie Sorenson came next with 245 votes; Cory Harkness had 231 votes, Cameron Weber 65 votes and Andrew Kerr with 42 votes.

Only 1122 eligible voters took the time to make their mark for the vacant seat.

Bailey made his presence felt by discussing plans for a new hospital for Weyburn and area residents, along with concerns regarding affordable housing and his willingness to be available to everyone who wants to have their voice heard.

"This was a tremendous exercise in democracy. I am pleased that there were so many candidates in this campaign. This is a sign that the citizens of Weyburn are truly engaged in the future vision of our city," said Mayor Debra Button.

"I am pleased to welcome Winston Bailey to City Council. I am confident that he will be a valuable addition to our team and an excellent spokesperson for the people of Weyburn," said Button.
