The top academic achievements from the 2009-10 school year were recognized on Aug. 31 at the 48th annual Awards Night for the Weyburn Comprehensive School, including the handing out of 54 scholarships and bursaries for students going on to post-secondary education.The top academic awards of the evening included the Governor General's Medal, which went to Mitch McCallum with an average of 98.3 per cent. McCallum was also presented with the R.C. Smith General Proficiency Trophy, which is awarded to a student of high academic achievement plus at least 40 points for extracurricular activities at the Comp; McCallum accumulated 140 points.He was also awarded the male T.C. Douglas Medal, with Rogan Milatz the runner-up with an average of 94 per cent. The female T.C. Douglas Medal went to Kate Andrews with an average of 95.3 per cent, and the runner-up was Deborah Nikkel with an average of 94.9 per cent.For Grade 11, the high average (and high overall for Grade 11) went to Anita Lazurko, with an average of 98.3 per cent, and the high average male was Justin Hippe with an average of 96.9 per cent.For Grade 10, the high average female was a tie between Dayna Haynes and Raquel Bellefleur with an average of 93.8 per cent, and the high average male was Thomas Carleton with 94.4 per cent; he was also the high average overall for the grade.The Level 30 Subject Medals were presented for all subjects at the Grade 12 level. Mitch McCallum and Deborah Nikkel each won three, McCallum for Math, Band and Physics, and Nikkel for Art, English and Social Studies.The medal for Business Education CPT went to Dustin de Vries, who also won the cosmetology medal, while Candace Funk won the Accounting and Drafting medals, and Claudia Harry won the Entrepreneurship medal. The French medal went to Raquel Dimmick, who also won the Biology medal; Laurae McIvor won the Home Economics medal, and Brenna Moser won the Choral medal.For Phys. Ed, Marc Henderson won the medal for boys, and Brett Schmidt won the medal for girls. Katie Lee won the Chemistry medal, and in the Tech/Voc area, Jesse Storle won the Construction medal; Thomas Martin won the Welding medal; Robert Pineo won the Mechanics medal; Blair Gaab won the Machining medal; and Chris Szabo won the Electronics medal.The University Women's Club Art Award was won by Erin Sidloski, and the University Women's Club French Award was won by Kelsey Ermel. Sidloski also won the Tom Zandee Humanitarian Award, and took home the Catholic Women's League bursary of $300, a Knights of Columbus Scholarship for $1,000, and the Weyburn Inland Terminal scholarship for $400.McCallum, in addition to the above awards, won the Apache bursary of $500, the CCS Landfill Services bursary of $1,500, and the Weyburn Credit Union's R.S. Williamson-Eliford Mott Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.Teagan Pragnell won the second bursary from the Catholic Women's League for $300; the Jim Rose Memorial bursary of $1,000; the second Knights of Columbus scholarship of $500; and the Weyburn Fire Brigade bursary for $500.Kate Andrews, in addition to the T.C. Douglas medal, also won a Weyburn Comp School Student Scholarship for $1,000, along with Katie Lee.Kaylyn Jensen won the Masonic Lodge bursary of $250, the Order of the Royal Purple bursary of $150, the Weyburn Comp School's Citizenship Award of $500, the Southeast Cornerstone School Division scholarship of $750, and the Weyburn Young Fellows Don Murray Memorial bursary of $1,000.The Access Scholarship for $200 went to Jason Verbeem, and the Beta Sigma Phi XiXi bursary for $300 went to Kyle Kot.Paige Van de Sype won the Capt. Juli-Ann MacKenzie Memorial Bursary of $1,000, and the Weyburn Co-op Association Scholarship for $500; Bethan Weeding was the second recipient of the Co-op Scholarship.Cody Bercha was presented the Cenovus Energy bursary of $500, the Legion Weyburn branch bursary of $500, and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary bursary of $500.The first-ever presentation of the Darold Kot Scholarship in the amount of $500 went to Nathan Cugnet.
Hans de Winter won the Damon Goski Memorial Bursary of $1,000, and the South Country Equipment bursary of $1,500.The Frank and Mamie Kuchinka Award for excellence in science and math went to Rogan Milatz, and the Grad 84 Rocks! bursary of $500 went to Britta Von Hagen.Kale Babiarz won the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division's bursary of $500, the Legion Ladies Auxiliary bursary which is $1,000, plus $450 for continuing years, and the Young's Equipment bursary for $450.Paula Collins won the Jerry and Orlanda Mainil Bursary of $2,000, the Stewart Steel Bursary of $500, the Weyburn Comp School Custodians Scholarship of $200, and the Credit Union's R.S. Williamson-Eliford Mott Memorial Scholarship of $1,000.The Kate Meyers Scholarship, awarded to two students for $1,000 each, went to Carly Miller and Jayme Nagy, and Jayme's older sister Kelsey won the Satre-Nieviadomy Dental Scholarship for $1,000.The Len Williams-Weyburn Superbowl Scholarship for $400 went to Logan Ochitwa, who also won the Tony and Madeleine Moser Memorial Scholarship for $2,000.Claudia Harry won the second Masonic Lodge bursary for $250, and the Weyburn Kin Club Scholarship for $500. Blair Gaab won the RM of Weyburn Memorial Award of $500.Brenna Moser won the Legion Weyburn branch bursary of $500, and the Weyburn Comp School Coca-Cola award for $1,000.The Sask. Youth Apprenticeship Scholarship for $1,000 went to Jenna Kater.The Weyburn Comp School's Xerox award of $500 went to Gene Irwin, who was also given the Valedictorian Award. Gene left on Wednesday morning for a one-year student exchange to Germany through the Rotary Club.Brett Schmidt won the third Credit Union R.S. Williamson-Eliford Mott Memorial Scholarship of $1,000, and one of the Weyburn Rotary Club's scholarships for $1,500, with Alyssa Postnikoff winning the second Rotary Club award.Shawn Lonechild won the Weyburn and District Lioness Club scholarship of $200, and Kym Berling won the second scholarship from the Weyburn Inland Terminal for $400.
