A regular meeting of the Weyburn City Council was held on January 10; here are the major points of interest:

*Council denied a request to relocate the STC Bus Terminal to the Co-op Food Store from the Shell Gas Station, where it has been for several years but must now find a new location.

Council reached this decision after holding a closed-door discussion with concerned area residents, who felt that the neighbourhood could not handle the increased traffic that would result from the placement of the terminal.

"I do have to agree with the concerns brought up by the residents," said Councillor Andrew Broccolo. "One of the biggest issues is the off-loading of passengers - I see a problem with it in that area. I don't know that this is the best place for it."

Councillor Bill Rudachyk agreed.

"My biggest concern, without a doubt, is safety at the east entrance to the Co-op and west entrance to the Credit Union," said Rudachyk. "That is already a major traffic problem that will only get worse."

Council agreed that they would like to see STC bus service continue in Weyburn but a more suitable location will have to be found.

*A proposed extension to the runway at the Weyburn Airport was denied, as it was deemed unnecessary.

The City had commissioned Stantec Consulting to perform a feasibility study on the extension and it was concluded that the extension would have minimal impact on airport traffic and the type of aircraft being used.

Council decided that the proposed $5.6 million lengthening and widening of the runway could be looked at again in the future but was not necessary at this time.
