Deadline extended for the Economic Action Plan

The federal government announced an extension to their deadline for completion of the Economic Action Plan Infrastructure projects on Thursday.

The federal government announced an extension to their deadline for completion of the Economic Action Plan Infrastructure projects on Thursday.

"I was very pleased to hear the Prime Minister announce the extension of the deadline for completion of the Economic Action Plan Infrastructure projects," said Ed Komarnicki, MP for Souris-Moose Mountain.

"The Prime Minister and the Transport Minister said in the House of Commons that we would be fair, reasonable and flexible with respect to those projects that could not be completed by March 31, 2011, but as much comfort as that was, it was great to have a fixed extension date to Oct. 31, 2011."

The extension allows for one full construction season. "That means a lot to communities that started projects late or for a variety of reasons had difficulty making the March 31 deadline," added Komarnicki.

Projects in the southeast area that will benefit from the extension includes the Saskatchewan Energy Training Institute, being built in Estevan by the Southeast Regional College.

"This will give them a reasonable opportunity to complete, and of course to collect, on the $7 million allocated by our government under the Knowledge Infrastructure Project," said Komarnicki. "I am both delighted and relieved that they will have a chance to realize the full amount of allotted funding."

The extension applies to all projects funded under the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund Committee's Component Top-Up, the Recreational Infrastructure Canada Program and the Knowledge Infrastructure Program. In order to qualify for this extension, work must have begun on the project and eligible costs incurred before March 31, 2011.

"Even though this is a one-time extension, it's all we should need in Souris-Moose Mountain," said Komarnicki.
