On July 22, the RCMP Detachment at Carnduff received a call about some possible human remains which had been unearthed at a residential construction site in Oxbow. Detachment members attended the location and initiated an investigation with the assistance of the Regina Major Crimes Unit and the Yorkton Forensic Identification Section.

The remains are confirmed to be human and are believed to have been in the ground for fifty plus years. The remains are possibly an old grave site and foul play is not suspected. The RCMP Detachment in Carnduff are continuing to investigate and have involved the services of a forensic anthropologist to assist in determining the race and age of the remains.

Analysis by a forensic anthropologist has determined that the remains located are those of an adult, aboriginal male. The remains are approximately 200 years old. The burial site has been turned over to the Heritage Conservation Branch, Saskatchewan Tourism, Culture and Sport who will complete the recovery of the remains and make arrangements for a proper reburial.

On July 27, Moosomin RCMP were advised that two canoeists found what appears to be human remains along the shore of Moosomin Lake in Moosomin Regional Park. The canoeists had been out on the water in the evening of July 26 when they stopped along the shore for a rest, discovering the bones.

Members from the Moosomin RCMP Detachment then went with one of the canoeists to the location where the bones were found and took pictures of the bones and the surrounding area. In consultation with Dr. Ernie Walker, Forensic Anthropologist from the University of Saskatchewan, the skeletal remains were determined to be human. Members from the RCMP Historical Case Unit South and the Yorkton Forensic Identification Section are going to carefully excavate the bones and continue their consultation with the Forensic Anthropologist to determine, if possible, the sex, race and age of the remains and how long the remains have been in their current location.

Analysis conducted by a forensic anthropologist has determined that the human remains are those of an adult, aboriginal male. The remains are historical in nature, dating back approximately 500 to 1000 years ago. The remains will be turned over to the Heritage Conservation Branch, Saskatchewan Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport for proper reburial.

Moosomin Regional Park is 8 miles southwest of Moosomin, SK. The location where the bones were found is accessible only by boat.
