SaskPower pays $50 for your old fridge

SaskPower will pay $50 to take that old fridge off the hands of Saskatchewan residents, beginning April 6.

"Energy efficiency programs are a key part of SaskPower's plan to ensure Saskatchewan continues to have an affordable and sustainable supply of electricity," said Rob Norris, Minister responsible for SaskPower. "In addition to energy savings, this program could create as many as 20 new jobs in the province."

SaskPower has partnered with JACO EcoSolutions Canada Inc. (JES). JES will open an office in Saskatchewan and hire additional staff in order to handle the anticipated volume of fridges and freezers that will need to be collected and recycled responsibly.

"Customers often ask why SaskPower would encourage people to use less of our product," said Robert Watson, SaskPower president and chief executive officer. "Energy efficiency programs like this one cost less than adding new generation sources. Giving people an incentive to conserve power is a win-win - for SaskPower and our customers - because it helps lower power bills and protects the environment."

Recycling just one old refrigerator provides the same environmental benefits as taking one mid-sized car off Saskatchewan roads for one year.

SaskPower introduced the Refrigerator Recycling Program as a pilot project last year and received an overwhelming response. Anyone who wants to participate this year is encouraged to call early as the program is once again expected to fill up quickly.

To qualify, fridges must be at least 15 years or older; in working condition (plugged in and operating at the time of scheduled pickup); between 10 and 25 cubic feet (no commercial or bar size refrigerators) and be located at a primary residence within Saskatchewan. Freezers are also included in the program this year, as long as a refrigerator is picked up at the same time. Freezers do not have an age or size restriction, but they must be in working order. There is a maximum of four units (fridges or freezers) per household.

People interested in participating can visit www.skrecycle.ca or call 1-877-SK RECYCLE (1-877-757-3292) to find out if their fridge or freezer qualifies and to arrange for a pick-up. Complete program details are available at saskpower.com/save_power.
