The town of Carlyle is now in the process of revamping their recreation management, and as part of that process, they are hiring a new parks, recreation and culture director.

The Carlyle town council has been trying to find ways to make the recreation facilities and operations run more smoothly. Therefore, they decided on July 21 to hire someone who would be in charge of making sure that all the facilities for recreation are maintained and their operations run according to plan. However, as Natalie Miller, the chief administrative officer at the town office, explained, the plan was always to find out what the people in town wanted and use that information to find out what was best for recreation management.

“Through the meetings with the volunteer boards and committees, it was evident that this new recreation delivery system was something that was welcomed and will definitely meet the needs of these user groups … We do foresee a bit of a transition period as we move to this new model and appreciate the support from the volunteer boards as we move forward.”

The town council also used surveys to try to understand more clearly what the priorities should be for the parks, recreation, and culture department.

Overall, the main facilities that the recreation director will be responsible for are the Carlyle Sports Arena, Carlyle Swimming Pool, and Carlyle Memorial Hall—although they will also be in charge of the other sites.

There will also be several other positions as part of the new parks, recreation, and culture department, including a parks and recreation foreman. All of these new roles will be supervised and managed by the town’s recreation director.

As Carlyle Mayor Jenn Sedor explained, this new role is meant to help the process of maintaining the parks, recreation and culture part of Carlyle. She explained that Carlyle is a town with many facilities and opportunities, but these things come with the challenge of maintenance and organization.

At the moment, most of the facilities in Carlyle have their own separate teams of volunteers trying to keep up with managing and maintaining facilities. The hope is that by having this new position, the town facilities will be more unified and easier to manage.

“Our vision for this person is that they…actually help keep our recreation, parks, culture and all our facilities in good health. And right now, we can kind of start to see we have aging facilities, we have tired volunteers, so it really was time to take this step.”
