Transportation expert to make Weyburn more active

An expert on active transportation will be coming to Weyburn to help make the city better suited to an active lifestyle.

Weyburn In-Motion, in conjunction with Saskatchewan In-Motion, will be bringing renowned community consultant Dan Burden to Weyburn from August 30 to September 1 for the Dan Burden Walkable and Livable Communities Workshop. The community is invited to be active members in the workshop during a public presentation on Tuesday, August 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. at City Hall.

The aim of the workshop is to assist the City in future urban planning to make Weyburn even more suited to active transportation, and therefore encourage walking, cycling , jogging and an active lifestyle for residents.

Great efforts have been made to bring one of North America's most renowned consultants in Dan Burden, to listen to the community, the public's wants and needs, along with his professional assessment for City planners.

Burden is an internationally recognized authority on livable and sustainable communities, healthy streets, traffic calming, and bicycle and pedestrian programs. He has more than 35 years of experience helping create livable communities through a focus on non-motorized transportation.

Burden co-founded Walkable Communities in 1996. Since then, he has helped 2,700 communities throughout the world become more livable and walkable.

In 2009, Dan started the Walkable and Livable Communities Institute to assist cities throughout the world in becoming more walkable, bicycle friendly, sustainable, socially engaged, and welcoming places by improving the built form. Through on-site assessments, independent expert review of projects, workshops, webinars, lectures and conferences, Burden engages planners, designers, and leaders to successfully rebuild blocks, neighborhoods, towns, and regions.
