Howard Georgeson, Chief of Police of the Weyburn Police Service, has announced his resignation, effective the end of 2011. Georgeson expressed a desire to be closer to his family in Prince Albert.

"I have truly enjoyed my time as Chief of Police and I want to assure you that I am leaving for nothing more than a sense of not being at home with my family," said Georgeson. "I would like to thank you all for your support and the opportunity to serve as Chief for Weyburn."

Weyburn Mayor Debra Button, who is also head of the Police Commission, accepted Georgeson's resignation with regret.

"Howard has done a simply outstanding job for our community during his time here. He has in many ways redefined the job of police chief in our city. It will be hard to replace him," Button said.

Georgeson started with the City of Weyburn in August of 2009. His achievements include co-ordinating a $10,000 donation from Cenovus Energy for the purchase of a police quad vehicle and co-ordinating a $5,600 donation from SGI to establish an in-house recording system for the police department. Georgeson also implemented the Report Impaired Drivers (RID) program in Weyburn.

Button expressed her best wishes for Georgeson's future.

"Howard is a very talented and capable individual so I am confident that he will excel in his next career steps just as he has in this one," said Button.

The Mayor also said that the Police Commission will meet in the near future to establish a search committee to recruit a new chief and to discuss appointing an interim chief.
