The nominations are now in and the judging has begun for the 13th annual Women of Today Awards.
The nomination luncheon that was held last Wednesday revealed the names of the nominees in the four categories that celebrate women of accomplishment in the community.

The awards will be handed out during the gala Women of Today ceremony on May 4 with noted Lampman author/educator Maureen Ulrich as the guest speaker.

But last Wednesday provided the first opportunity to have a look at the nominees during a luncheon hosted by the co-ordinators of the event, Estevan Quota Club and Estevan Lions Club.

Valerie Hall served as emcee for the program that included a few words of greeting from Joan Jarvis, corporate relations officer for SaskPower, the lead sponsor of the awards program who then presented Hall, the Quota Club representative and Pat Abernethy, the Lions Club representative, with a cheque for $4,200 to help launch this year's event.

Jarvis congratulated the community for providing financial and social support for the program and for consistently coming through with strong nominees who were all winners simply because they were being recognized for their contributions.

Albert Verbeurgt of Legacy Oil + Gas, a new corporate sponsor, then presented Hall and Abernethy with a cheque in the amount of $2,000 to add to the growth of the community awards program.

Councillor Lynn Chipley brought words of greeting from the City of Estevan and council, noting how the nominees show inner strength to advance in the business and volunteer communities.

The nominees in the four categories are as follows:

SaskPower Outstanding Contribution to the Workplace:
Debbie Clemens, office administrator at Century 21 Border Real Estate Service since 1997; Rebecca Howie and Tammy Grimes, graphic design team at Estevan Lifestyles and Newsbreak publications; and Amber Kelly, educational assistance in the alternative education classroom at Estevan Comprehensive School.

The SaskTel Outstanding Contribution to Community:

Major recipients of past financial assistance from the Women of Today Awards project were represented at the luncheon with Patt Lenover-Adams of Envision and Tamara Giles of the Family Centre on hand to enjoy the proceedings.

Hall pointed out the goals and objectives of Quota Clubs and Lions Clubs on the local and international level and noted how those objectives are being met with their local contributions.
