Apex U18 AA Bruins lead 2-0 in series with Weyburn

ESTEVAN - The Estevan Apex U18 AA Bruins have a 2-0 series lead in their first round playoff matchup with the Weyburn Wings, after beating Weyburn 4-2 in Weyburn Saturday. 

Game 2 saw Estevan lead 3-1 after the first period on goals by Ryker Mathison, Alec Waldegger and Kade Phillips. Weyburn scored to pull within one in the second, but Mason Fichter scored in the third to restore the two-goal lead. 

Keagan Carley stopped 34 of 36 shots in Game 2.   

The series is a best of five. Estevan is the No. 2 seed in the South Division for the Saskatchewan AA Hockey League, while Weyburn is the seventh seed.

Game 3 is Tuesday night at Affinity Place. Game 4, if necessary, would be March 3 in Weyburn and Game 5 would be March 6 in Estevan at 5:15 p.m.

The Estevan TS&M U15 AA Bruins played three times in a five-day span. 

First was a 6-3 loss Wednesday in Balgonie to the Prairie Storm – the No. 2 team in the league. Goals by Hayden Terrett in the first, and Porter Crossman and Conrad Hase in the second, gave Estevan a 3-2 advantage with 8:50 to play in the middle frame. But the Storm would get three before the end of the second and one in the third. 

Chase Borreson made 27 saves in the loss. 

Next was a 14-1 loss to the Regina Aces Friday night at Affinity Place. Tristan Brownridge had the lone Estevan goal.  

Jaxon Kuchinka made 23 saves. 

The final game was an 8-3 loss to the Saskatoon Outlaws Sunday at Affinity Place in their final home game of the regular season. Gunner Moore, Cowan Luedtke and Keagon Patton scored for Estevan.

Borreson made 35 saves for the Bruins.

Estevan (5-25) will close out the regular season on March 5 when they visit the Aces.
