Carlyle Cougars defeat Wawota Flyers Sunday to wrap up busy weekend in the Big Six

The Carlyle Cougars defeated the Wawota Flyers 6-3 Sunday night in Carlyle.

Brett Turgeon scored twice for Carlyle, who trailed 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 at one point early in the second.

Ben Johnstone, Koby Morrisseau, Devan Fafard and Dakota Rose also scored for Carlyle.

Ty Kotylak, Jordan Fox and Trevor Stewart had the Wawota goals.

Landon Audet was in goal for Carlyle, while Zach Lees was the Wawota goalie.

The Cougars’ victory capped what was a busy weekend in the Big Six, with three games Friday night and four Saturday.

Friday’s games saw the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings edge the Bienfait Coalers 4-3 in overtime, the Redvers Rockets blank the Wawota Flyers 7-0 and the Moosomin Rangers knock off the Oxbow Huskies 6-1.

Yellow Grass and Bienfait had a back-and-forth contest on Friday, with Russell Purday scoring for Bienfait with 1:47 to play in the third period to force overtime, but Rhett Frey notched the winner with a second to play in overtime. It was Frey’s second of the game.

Tristan Seeman and Dylan Herzberg also scored for Bienfait, and Ethan Veorba was in goal.

Braden Mellon and Kyle Mryglod had Yellow Grass’ other goals. Terrick Wilderman was the Wheat Kings goalie.

Oliver Poirier had two goals in Redvers’ win over Wawota. Kevin Mann, Preston Kopeck, Brady Gaudet, Braeden Magotiaux and Dylan Smallchild had the other Redvers goals.

Thomas Bauche earned the shutout in net for Redvers, while Kyle Steinke was the goalie for Wawota.

Moosomin scored three times in the opening 5:23 of the first period against Oxbow. Monty Driver had two of the goals for the Rangers in the opening frame. Bud Holloway also scored twice, while Drew Schiller and Justin Lamontagne also scored.

Kelby Widenmaier had the goal for Oxbow.

Kyler Beckett was the Rangers goalie, while Cody Levesque was in net for the Huskies.

Saturday’s games saw the Midale Mustangs nick the Huskies 5-4 in overtime to get their first win of the season, the Rockets double up the Cougars 6-3, the Carnduff Red Devils beat the Rangers 4-2 and the Wheat Kings beat the Coalers 5-1 to remain the only undefeated team in the league.

Steven Lindenbach scored his third of the game with 97 seconds to play in overtime to lift Midale to the victory. The Mustangs trailed 3-1 and 4-2 in the third period before mounting a comeback.

Devon Johnson and Khenan Colbow had Midale’s other goals.

Derek Cooney scored twice for Oxbow. Ty Podon and Brycen Odgers also scored.

Talen King was in goal for Midale, while Cody Levesque was the Oxbow netminder.

Ty Stovin, Mark Moriarty, Brandon Trask and Dan Moriarty scored for Carnduff in their win over Moosomin.

Driver and Anthony Radkey had Moosomin’s goals.

Cody Dumaine was in net for Carnduff, while Levi Horn was in net for Moosomin.

Kopeck scored twice for Redvers in the win over Carlyle. Dayline Smallchild, Brady Gaudet, Tie Braun and Poirier had their other goals.

Johnstone, Brent McLean and Jon Gaudet had the Carlyle goals.

Cody Matthewson was the goalie for Redvers, while Ryan Kulyk was the Cougars’ goalie.

Colton Winton had the Coalers’ lone goal Saturday. Braden Mellon had two for Yellow Grass, while Dylan Frey, Rhett Frey and Tucker Neuberger also scored. 

Zack Miller was in net for Bienfait, while Nate Ferris was the Yellow Grass goaltender.

There are three games left on the schedule before the Big Six takes a break for Christmas. Redvers will visit Carlyle on Dec. 22. And Moosomin will visit Wawota and Midale is at Oxbow on Dec. 23.

All games will start at 8 p.m.
