The Estevan Bruins will finish with the best record in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League in the 2021-22 season.

ESTEVAN - The Estevan Bruins will finish first overall in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League standings for the first time since 2005.

Estevan dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Weyburn Red Wings Saturday night in Weyburn in the Bruins’ regular season finale, but the point for the extra time loss was enough to wrap up the regular season pennant.

Estevan (43-10-2-3, 91 points) has a five-point lead on the Humboldt Broncos (43-13, 86 points) for first place overall. Humboldt has two games remaining, and can finish with a maximum of 90 points.

The Bruins will be the league’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs, and will have home ice advantage in all series. The playoffs are slated to begin on March 18. The Bruins’ first round opponent has yet to be determined.

Estevan picked up three of a possible four points on the weekend, defeating the Melville Millionaires 3-2 on Friday and then losing to Weyburn.

Brandon Ambrozik opened the scoring for the Bruins with a goal 4:57 into the first period. Noah Wills tied the game for Melville, but Mark Rumsey restored the Bruins’ lead a few minutes later.

Dayton Decis added to the Bruins lead with a goal 12 minutes into the second period, but Melivlle’s Cole Larocque would cut into the advantage before the middle frame was finished.

Neither team scored in the third.

Boston Bilous stopped 15 of the 17 shots he faced for Estevan.

Jared Thompson made 34 saves for Melville.

The following night, Estevan had a 3-1 lead entering the third period on goals by Eric Pearce and Deics in the first period, and Nolan Jones in the second.

Davis Chorney had Weyburn’s lone goal in the first.

Chorney scored twice in the third to tie the game, and then added the winner 45 seconds into extra time.

It was the first time that Weyburn defeated Estevan in 10 regular season meetings this season.

Cam Hrdlicka started and allowed one goal on three shots before leaving the game due to injury. Bilous came in and made 17 saves on 20 shots.

Dazza Mitchell made 34 saves on 37 shots for Weyburn.
