Gedak, Krupski advance to southern curling finals

It was a small field, but that just made every shot and every end that much more intense.

The Region 4 men's curling playdowns were staged at the Estevan Curling Club last weekend with just four teams registered for the event that would send two teams to the southern finals this coming weekend in Weyburn.

After all the brushing had been done, Estevan's Brent Gedak and Whitewood's Jason Krupski and their teams were the ones who earned the right to represent Region 4 in the next round.

On Saturday in the A event final, Gedak and Krupski hooked up for an interesting matchup that eventually saw Krupski prevail 9-8 in an extra end.

Gedak then dropped down to the B event final and took out Estevan's Jeff Mosley 8-5 to earn the ticket to Weyburn for the Southerns that will staged from Jan. 21 to 23.

Gedak has joined forces with two other members of his former junior team that advanced to the Canadian finals a few years ago, plus one new face.

"We call it our reunion team," he said.

Third man is John Aston while Derek Owen and Malcolm Vanstone handle second and lead chores respectively.

"We re-united, we're good friends," said Gedak who added that this is his travelling team and they have worked well together this season, the first year of the reunion project. He said his teammates seem to understand the game plan and strategy that evolves from each game situation, which makes it easier for the skip.

"We've met Krupski before. He's good. We knew what we were up against with him," Gedak said.

He added that taking on Mosley was also no walk in the park on any given day either. "No game against Jeff is ever easy," he said.

Mosley reached the B final by eliminating Adam Himmelspech of Lampman Saturday morning.
