WEYBURN – The outdoor ice space is ready to go at the Credit Union Spark Centre for the sport of Crokicurl, which combines the sport of curling with the board game crokinole. The Crokicurl ice is located adjacent to the outdoor rink, bordering on Jubilee Park.

Representatives of the Weyburn Curling Club will be on hand on National Curling Day, on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. to put on a demonstration of how to play the game.

From this point on, the ice is available on a first-come first-served basis, and the hours are from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Signage will be posted onsite with the rules and instructions on playing the game.

The Rocks are in a yellow bin on the northwest side of the outdoor rink. City staff just ask that the rocks be put away after each use.

The City of Weyburn received a grant from the South East Sport, Culture and Recreation District which gave them a head start on the Crokicurl project, said Tina Clay of Weyburn’s recreation department.

“With those funds, we ordered rocks specific to Crokicurl. The Weyburn Agricultural Society reached out and agreed to sponsor the supplies and build the frame. From there, they reached out to Stewart Steel who donated the steel for the posts so that we will have this game for years to come,” explained Clay.

Members from the Weyburn Agricultural Society and the Weyburn Curling Club built the Crokicurl ice surface with flooding by Spark Centre staff to get it ready to go.

The game has a set of rings like in curling, except there are posts around the inner circle, and the aim is to have a rock end up on the button in the centre for 20 points. Failing that, each shot must make contact with an opponent’s rock, unless there are no rocks on the surface. If the rock fails to make contact with an opponent’s rock, it is removed from the surface.

The outer ring is five points, the inner white ring is 10 points, the inner ring is 15 points and the button is 20 points. The game is played with two teams, with one or two players on each team.
