Soccer teams win gold in Saskatoon

The Saskatoon Kickstart tournament officially started the season for all traveling soccer teams from Weyburn on May 14 and 15. Three teams won gold, the U10 Mini Red Devils, the U12 L'il Black Devils and the U16 Red Devils.

The Saskatoon Kickstart tournament officially started the season for all traveling soccer teams from Weyburn on May 14 and 15. Three teams won gold, the U10 Mini Red Devils, the U12 L'il Black Devils and the U16 Red Devils.

The U14 Junior Black Devils made it to the semi-final match of their competition.

During the round robin they defeated the Saskatoon Eastside Sabres 4-0. Tyler Fox scored twice and Bryce Hoffman and Nick Cuthbert chipped in singles. Marcus Kuling picked up the shutout in goal.

In the second game of the round robin, the Junior Devils tied the Saskatoon Hallandia United 1-1. Kalen Oliver scored the lone goal with two minutes remaining. Goalie Conner Lafoy held Saskatoon scoreless until early in the second half.

Then the Junior Devils played Saskatoon Aurora Bulls in their final round robin match, and turned the momentum in their favour in the second half. Fox scored the winning goal and Kuling backstopped the Devils to another shutout.

With a 2-0-1 record, the Junior Devils finished second in their pool and faced Saskatoon Lakewood in the semi-final match, where they lost 3-0.

This was the first competition for the Junior Black Devils this season. After only one practice and one friendly game against the U16 Weyburn girls, the Devils came together very quickly to play as a team.

The Junior Black Devils are coached by father and son duo John and Thomas Megenbir, and managed by Corey Lascelle. The team consists of Rylee Lascelle, Brayden Roberts, Bryce Hoffman, Tanner Quintyn, Adair Borys, Conner Lafoy, Mitch Bellefleur, Tyler Fox, Nick Cuthbert, Logan Mainil, Tyson Verbeem, Daylan Swanson, Kalen Oliver, Eric Shanaida, Marcus Kuling, Cody Cooke, Josh Kurtz, Ruslan Povelko, and Kyle Bartlett.
