Weyburn Iron Pigs trounce Moose Jaw in first playoff game

Weyburn will meet up the Padres in Moose Jaw on Thursday night for Game 2.

WEYBURN – The Weyburn Iron Pigs opened their first playoff round with a 10-0 win over the Moose Jaw Padres on Tuesday night at Tom Laing Park.

The bats were active for Weyburn, with two runs scored in the first and second innings, then five were scored in the fifth inning, and one more in the sixth.

Brad Weisgerber, Luke Niemegeers, Kelton Hoium and Adam Ziegler each had two runs, with Ketter Hoium and Evan Schultz each with one. Mike Onstad, Niemegeers, Schultz and pitcher Eric Evans each had two RBIs, and Kelton Hoium and Ziegler both had one RBI.

Evans was on the mound for all six innings, allowing five hits and 13 strike-outs.

The Iron Pigs finished third in their division of the Qu’Appelle Valley Baseball League with a record of eight wins and eight losses, behind the Regina Trappers in first place and the Regina Dodgers in second.

The second game will be on Thursday evening in Moose Jaw at Ross Wells Park, and if necessary, the series will finish in Weyburn on Sunday, Aug. 14.

The winner of this series will face either the Trappers or Dodgers in the next round of playoffs.
