Weyburn to host female Russian hockey team

Weyburn has been chosen as one of the communities to host the Moscow Atlant, a female bantam hockey team from Russia that will be touring through the southern part of Saskatchewan. The team will play at Crescent Point Place on Thursday, Dec. 16.



Weyburn has been chosen as one of the communities to host the Moscow Atlant, a female bantam hockey team from Russia that will be touring through the southern part of Saskatchewan. The team will play at Crescent Point Place on Thursday, Dec. 16.

This exhibition game was arranged to assist the female side of hockey grow in countries outside of Canada, the United States and Sweden. While Russia is a hockey powerhouse on the male side of the game, they are still working at increasing the participation levels of the female side of the sport.

The Moscow Atlant will play eight games while on their tour of southern Saskatchewan, and while in Weyburn will be billeted with local hockey families. Team members will get the opportunity to visit schools, see local attractions, and learn more about female hockey in Canada.

The Russian coaches for this team have competed as players themselves at previous Olympics and world championships. Other locations to host the Moscow Atlant include Swift Current, the Woodriver Ice Cats, the Lumsden and Bethune Lions, the Prairie Storm, Springside, Moose Jaw and Estevan.
