It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Neoma Atkins, late of Weyburn who passed away January 7, 2012, at the age of 87 years. Neoma was predeceased by her husband Bill Atkins; her parents, Joseph and Lea Pichette; her father and mother-in-law, George and Alice Atkins; three sisters: Emma, Yvonne and Flora; six brothers: Phil, Raymond, Wilfred, Elmer, Ernest and Merle.Neoma is survived by her god daughter, Colleen (Gord) Gallinger, Weyburn along with nieces, nephews and many close friends. Neoma Grace Atkins (nee Pichette) was born on June 22, 1924 to Joseph and Lea Pichette, the youngest of ten children. She was born on the farm near Lestock in the R.M. of Kelrose where she spent her childhood. Sadness struck her life early when her father died when she was only 17 and her mother passed away when she was 21. She came to Khedive at the age of 22 to live with her brother and where she worked as a telephone operator. It was there she met the love of her life Bill Atkins. After a short courtship they were married on February 6, 1947. It was one of the worst winters on record with a tremendous amount of snowfall, trains getting stuck and snow being higher than telegraph lines. They lived on the farm for a few years then moved to Khedive where they lived until the fall of 1982 when they moved to Weyburn. Neoma was a meticulous housekeeper and their home was always neat and tidy. She had a large garden in both Khedive and Weyburn and many people were the recipients of the produce from her garden. She was a very giving person and as my father-in-law said she would give you the shirt off her back. Neoma was totally devoted to Bill. When he became ill she cared for him at home unitl his health no longer permitted it. She was his advocate and wasn't afraid to take on a doctor or nurse if she didn't think they were doing procedures correctly. Bill passed away on November 10, 2001, they had been together 54 years. Neoma was a member of the CWL for over 50 years. She was a member of the church choir and the funeral choir for many years. Her religion and the church were very important to her. Her faith helped her with the many sorrows and trials she faced in her life. Neoma had a large circle of friends and loved to socialize playing cards, making music and dancing. She was very musical playing the accordian, guitar, organ, piano and as I mentioned before, singing. I have been visiting with friends these past few days and the one thing I kept hearing over and over again was of the fun and laughter that was part of their friendship with Neoma and their times with her and that is so true, she loved to have fun. I would be remiss if I didn' t make mention of her 1963 Chev Impala, that they had bought brand new and her going to the Cruise Nights in costume. She was very proud when she won a prize there one year. Neoma had a full life she was always busy with home, family, friends and church. The last years of her life were very hard as we had to watch her struggles with her health. On January 7 her trials ended and she left this world to go home to be with the Lord and be reunited with Bill. Prayers were held on Monday, January 9 at 7:00 p.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn. Funeral mass for Neoma was held on Tuesday, January 10 at 10:30 a.m. from St. Vincent de Paul Roman Catholic Church, Weyburn with Father Gerry Bauche, celebrant. Interment followed at Hillcrest Cemetery, Weyburn. Honorary pallbearers were the Tatagwa View Staff. Active pallbearers were Darcy Barth, Dallas Froh, Jonathan Froh, Cliff Moser, Joe Moser and Mike Moser and the CWL provided an Honorguard. For family and friends so wishing donations in memory of Neoma may be made to a charity of choice.
