ESTEVAN - The Estevan branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is going to host a community barbecue on May 8 to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day.

With the theme of A Shared Moment of Celebration, the event will be held from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in front of the legion's club room. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs will be served, along with soft drinks and water.

The event will mark 80 years since the end of fighting for the Second World War in Europe.

"It was a historical day that sparked spontaneous celebrations across Allied nations as people from all walks of life come together," states the legion's promotional information. "What better way to commemorate VE Day 80 than by getting together with your neighbours and community to celebrate?"

Whether people are looking to honour the past, share local stories, connect with those around them, or simply enjoy a fun, food-filled gathering with neighbours, the legion says the barbecue is the "perfect" way to mark the occasion.
