Estevan's army cadets wrap up season with sunset service

Numerous awards were handed out during the service.

ESTEVAN — The No. 2901 Estevan (Elks) PPCLI Army Cadet Corps wrapped up their season June 4 by hosting their annual sunset service and ceremonial review.

The service was held outside the Estevan branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, and the review and awards presentation happened inside the legion. A large crowd gathered for the activities.

This year's award recipients included best first-year cadet (green star), Cadet Darius Nixon; best second-year cadet (red star), Cpl. Cyrus Osano; best third-year cadet (silver star) and the Fred Slater Memorial Trophy, Master Cpl. Santino Josol; most improved cadet, Master Cpl. Acadia McCord-Southcott; and attendance award, Cpl. Kurt Palmis;

For sports awards, recipients were: best all-round athlete, Cpl. Cyrus Osano; most sportsmanlike award, Cadet Darius Nixon; and espirit de corps award for sports, Master Cpl. Santino Josol.

For shooting awards, the best overall shooter was Chief Warrant Officer Akara Reeves, the best first-year shooter was Cadet Darius Nixon; and the top three shooters were Master Warrant Officer Akara Reeves, Cpl. Zeke Haider-Osana and Cpl. Cyrus Osano (tied for second); and Cadet Bentley Marshall and Cadet Brookelynn Guyan (tied for third).

Reeves also received a Legion Medal of Excellence and the Lord Strathcona Medal. She is one of two members who is aging out; the other is P. Cpl. Jacob Pyra.

Commanding Officer Craig Bird said it was a good year for the army cadets. They had about 30 members this year, which is consistent with past years. He said he is happy with their performance during the year, and he is looking forward to coming back in the fall and continuing with cadet training.
