ESTEVAN — The Prairie Prime Junior Stock Club is hosting its first-ever steer show and sale at the Darwin Dukart Memorial Beef Barn at the Estevan Exhibition Association's grounds.

Event spokesperson Kirsten Fornwald said activities will start at 11 a.m. on June 27 with judging and team grooming and then there will be a steer show. A social event and a meet-and-greet with the club members and their steers will happen at 5 p.m., and the sale will be at 6 p.m.

The first animal sold will be a charity steer that Fornwald said was donated by her family. Kids in the club voted to have 100 per cent of the proceeds from the steer's sale donated to the Creighton Lodge kitchen expansion project.

"It is a good fit for our new club, and it's something that is close in our community," Fornwald said. "The facility is growing and updating, and we wanted to be part of ensuring that it could be around for generations to come. We felt like it was a worthy cause for the steer to support."

Each of the 23 kids in the club will then have a steer sold. Awards will be presented during the show.

A buyer appreciation supper will be served after the sale.

Activities on June 28 will include an individual grooming competition at 11 a.m., and then their female cattle show, which will include yearling heifers and cow-calf pairs. The conclusion of the show will be a showmanship competition for all of the age divisions.

Fornwald said the club was formed earlier this year, and it has been an exciting six months of trying to get the club established, working together and getting things going.

The majority of the members are from the Estevan region, but there are some from the Macoun and Lampman areas. Fornwald said they were 4-H members in the past but are no longer affiliated.

"We've decided to just start something new. It gives our kids a little bit more opportunity to be involved in the community and give back to the community. We're excited for this new venture."

Fornwald said interest for the show has been "quite overwhelming". The club hosted a beer and brisket fundraiser in May, and they feel like that support has been carrying through to the upcoming sale.

She expects a charity steer will be part of the sale each year.

"We felt like, when we were establishing this club, that there really wasn't a better way to instill the core values that we have as a club and as a group of families to uphold giving back to our communities that have raised and supported us as families and individuals."

As a club, she said, they look forward to contributing time, talents and funds for valuable projects beyond this year.
