SOUTHEAST SASKATCHEWAN — Members of the Saskatchewan RCMP conducted a proactive traffic safety initiative in southeast Saskatchewan on June 6.
According to a news release issued June 16, the RCMP said officers from the Carnduff and Estevan detachments, the Saskatchewan RCMP’s Combined Traffic Services (CTSS) unit in Estevan, and conservation officers with the Provincial Protective Services Branch handled check stops in the Oxbow, Frobisher and Moose Creek Regional Park areas.
The traffic safety initiative was part of SGI’s Enforcement Overdrive program, which aims to decrease impaired driving across Saskatchewan.
During the check stops, the RCMP said officers were checking for unsafe driving behaviours, including impairment by drug and alcohol. Officers checked approximately 300 vehicles and conducted approximately 186 mandatory alcohol screening tests.
In total, officers issued 35 tickets, including four for speeding and two for using a handheld communications device while driving. They also gave 12 warnings.
Officers issued three roadside suspensions after determining drivers recently consumed alcohol. A motorhome was seized for three days after officers determined the driver had recently consumed alcohol.
“Whether it be texting and driving, speeding or driving impaired, we all know these behaviours are a risk to ourselves and others on the road. The problem is, despite knowing that, people continue to partake in these dangerous activities while behind the wheel,” said Carnduff RCMP Sgt. Michel Chateauneuf. “It’s your friends, family, neighbours, co-workers and community members that you share the road with – do your part is making sure everyone gets to their destination safely this summer.”
