Poll results: many exciting summer events in Assiniboia

ASSINIBOIA - A poll on an Assiniboia Facebook page recently asked residents what their favourite event or activity in Assiniboia would be for the summer.

Ninety respondents gave a variety of suggestions, but all responses were evidence that there are some exciting events and activities right in their home town offered for the summer months.

The top anticipated summer activity was the community’s Canada Day festivities, garnering 32 per cent of the votes. This is a clear indication of the full event flavour offered by organizers at this annual event. This year’s Canada Day festivities will include a pancake breakfast, axe throwing, face painting, entertainment, beverage gardens, food trucks, fireworks and much more.

The next double digit top response was 17 per cent for the pool, again offering insight into the value of this recreation venue in the community.

Museum activities garnered six per cent of the votes and tied with car shows, that also garnered six per cent of the votes.

Some respondents offered their own poll selections that included: golfing at eight per cent, camping in town one per cent, seven per cent voted for mini golf at the museum, four per cent voted for picnic in the park or playground, while 13 per cent of respondents voted for attending the Tuesday ‘Better Together’ barbecues in July and August. The upcoming June Garden Party at Shurniak Gallery gathered five per cent of votes.

Some people chose to private message this reporter instead of responding on the poll, and said they are excited about ball season in Assiniboia with competitive teams in all divisions of both baseball and softball as well as senior men’s baseball, in addition to slo-pitch games.

There also was anticipation of Southern Cruisers Car Club activity, and upcoming movies at Olympia Theatre. The ‘Thunder from Down Under’ appearance in July was also lauded as another anticipated upcoming summer event.

As summer entices people to travel out of town for a multitude of exciting events and activities across the province, residents are voicing appreciation for the opportunity to enjoy options in their home town and several mentioned their appreciation of those who choose to operate summer activities, organize events and play host.

Anytime recreation venues, activity or events draw people into the community, it offers another benefit to town as economic spinoffs are seen through food, fuel and accommodations as well as added traffic to downtown shopping opportunities.
