RADVILLE — An early morning fire Nov. 9 destroyed a southern Saskatchewan town’s fire hall, along with an attached storage unit, maintenance shop and administrative building.
Crews from surrounding communities were dispatched to help the fire department in Radville fight the fire, which broke out at 2:15 a.m.
Mayor Rene Bourassa said the destruction has left residents devastated, but no injuries were reported.
“Everybody’s wondering where to go,” he said. “But it’s going to take us some time. It took out all our computers, all our phone lines and our security.”
Darryl Ferguson, Radville’s deputy fire chief, talked about how quickly the department’s equipment was destroyed by the fire.
“We were able to get two of our pump trucks out of the fire hall,” he said. “But as we were pulling away, the fire started coming out of the doors.”
By this time, the other two trucks had already been engulfed in flames.
Ferguson said the fire also destroyed a water tank that had been recently purchased for the community.
The town also lost its garbage truck and main maintenance tractor.
“It’s devastating,” said Bourassa. “It really took our whole system.”
Ferguson said the financial impact will be extensive.
“We don’t have a fire hall anymore,” he said.
“This is a multimillion-dollar loss for the community.”
Fire departments in Yellow Grass and Ceylon will cover the Radville area for the time being.
