A very important week focusing on mental health will be marked by the Weyburn branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).
The 66th annual CMHA Mental Health Week will be observed Monday to Sunday, May 1 to 7.
The Weyburn branch will host their annual Mayor’s Luncheon on Monday, May 1 at McKenna Hall to kick off Mental Health Week. The Mayor’s Luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The theme is “Mental Health For All” and the guest speaker is Kyle Moffat. He is actively involved in the mental health and addictions community. Moffat first got involved in August of 2015 when his father Wade committed suicide after suffering from Bi-Polar Disorder and Alcoholism. Since then, Moffatt has campaigned to change both social stigma and fight to expand treatment options for those suffering from mental illness and addiction.
Moffat currently is the founder of Project YANA (You Are Not Alone), board member for the Wade Moffatt Memorial Gala, Movember Regina and the CMHA Saskatchewan Division, recipient of a CBC Future 40 and Red Cross Young Humanitarian award. He is also a contributor to mental health conversations on multiple media networks.
The deadline for registration to the Mayor’s Luncheon was April 27.
A special semicolon tattoo event will be held at the Under Your Skin Tattoos in Weyburn on Tuesday, May 2. The semicolon tattoo event will help raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote mental health. Proceeds from the semicolon tattoos will be donated to the CMHA Weyburn branch and will be put towards local programs and mental health initiatives.
A Pamper Yourself Initiative will be held at the Déntente Spa on Tuesday to Thursday, May 2 to 5. They will be offering manicures and pedicures to promote self-care and the importance of caring for your physical, mental and emotional health. Half of the proceeds will be donated to CMHA Weyburn.
The CMHA Youth Theatre program will present “The Locket”, an original script developed by their participants on Wednesday and Thursday, May 3 and 4. The performance will be staged at the Tommy Douglas Centre at 7 p.m.
The synopsis of the play is “lonely and isolated from everything except her cat Cream Puff, writer Emily finds comfort in creating her characters’ stories. From romance to heartbreak, Emily writes about a journey where a locket weaves each character together travelling from London in the Second World War to present day.”
Also, the CMHA will host their third annual book sale on Wednesday and Thursday, May 3 and 4. It will be a sidewalk sale at Blue Earth Environmental, located at #29 Third Street. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
