The Operation Christmas Child program for Weyburn and area have new area drop-off leads who are collecting shoeboxes this year. Marna and Kelt McManus took over the lead position from Bev Alexander, and had assisted Alexander during last year’s program to learn about their new positions.
Operation Christmas Child is a hands-on way for Canadians to bless struggling children in the developing world by filling shoeboxes with toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and other items. The annual program is held by Samaritan’s Purse.
“We can’t have the shoeboxes on display in stores this year, because of COVID-19 guidelines,” said Marna. Church and school groups have an option to order the Operation Christmas Child Program.
Marna and Kelt have also made a connection with the Open Air Market, and will have a table set up one more time on Saturday, Nov. 14 during the market’s hours of operations from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents can also text Marna or Kelt at 306-891-8676 to arrange a drop-off of shoeboxes, or other informational items.
“We have pamphlets, fridge magnets, a DVD with information, and a list of items that are allowed in the shoeboxes. People can also request to get the shoeboxes flat, so they can have their own packing parties,” said Marna.
With the COVID-19 restrictions in mind, Marna and Kelt urge those interested in packing shoeboxes to keep it within their families, or small church groups. There is also an option to pack a shoebox online at https://packabox.samaritanspurse.ca. Anyone who does decide to use the online option will have their virtual shoebox added to the total of in-person collections for Weyburn and area.
“We are hoping that more people consider packing a shoebox this year,” said Marna.
A drop off will be held at the Free Methodist Church on Saturday, Nov. 21 and Sunday, Nov. 22. It is recommended that everyone who has packed a shoebox have all the pamphlets filled out ahead of time.
