The Weyburn Police Service has received numerous calls from local residents regarding both a scam in the name of the STARS lottery as well as a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) scam.
In the STARS case, the victim is being notified they have won a major prize and are being requested to pay the tax on the prize. It is against the law in Canada to have to pay anything for a legitimately-won prize. In the CRA scam case, as in others similar to this before, the victim is being threatened with legal action unless they pay. CRA does not operate in this manner.
