Police respond to accidents and other calls

Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) were busy with collisions and other calls in late June and early July. Police responded to a report of an accident near the intersection of 13th Avenue and Sixth Street during the June 27 day shift.

Members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) were busy with collisions and other calls in late June and early July. 

Police responded to a report of an accident near the intersection of 13th Avenue and Sixth Street during the June 27 day shift. Members learned it was a minor accident, and there weren’t any injuries, so it didn’t have to be reported to police. Officers assisted with exchanging information and the motorists were sent on their way.

Members also received a call about a vehicle being damaged on the city’s west side. The matter is under investigation.

Police responded to a call about an electronic monitoring alarm for a person on release conditions during the June 27 night shift. The man was located at home and the issue is believed to have been an equipment malfunction. Police remained until the device was determined to be working properly. 

Members were then asked to look for a vehicle that might be driven by an impaired driver. Police did not have a licence plate, but they did receive a description of the vehicle. It was not located. 

Police stopped an 18-year-old man driving on the north side of the city. He blew a warning reading into the roadside screening device and received a driver’s licence suspension. He was also out on conditions from a previous criminal charge and was breaching two of those conditions. He was released with a promise to appear in court. 

Officers arrested a 17-year-old male youth for theft. He was charged with one count of theft under $5,000 and was released to his parents. The youth is alleged to have entered several vehicles at a residence and took some items. Some of the property was recovered.

Police kept tabs on drivers in the city during the June 28 day shift. Several speeding tickets were issued. Motorists are reminded the speed limit in school zones and playground zones is 30 kilometres per hour, 24 hours a day. 

Officers assisted with another non-reportable accident in a parking lot. No injuries were sustained and both parties exchanged information.

Members also received a call about an individual burning garbage in their yard. The bylaw enforcement officer charged the homeowner accordingly. 

Police patrolled busy parking lots and functions in the city during the June 28 night shift to look for alcohol-related offences. Members are happy to report that none were detected or called in throughout the evening. 

Officers received a report of uttering threats. The suspect was warned about his actions.

Members responded to a break and enter in the core area. The matter is still under investigation.

Members were called to a semi-truck with an insecure load in the 1400-block of Sixth Street during the June 29 day shift. Traffic was redirected for approximately one hour while the load was secured. A male driver was charged and will appear in court in August to answer to the charge.

Officers responded to a landlord and tenant dispute. The matter was resolved without further police involvement. 

Police responded to a complaint of a suspicious person in the city’s west side during the June 29 night shift. Patrols in the area did not detect any suspicious activity. 

Members were also called to a report of an erratic driver on Kensington Avenue. Police located the vehicle in question and the driver was warned.

Police were called to an accident at the intersection of Fourth Street and Ninth Avenue involving a pickup truck and a school bus during the June 30 day shift. The driver of the school bus was charged for disobeying a red light. The matter is set for court in August. No injuries occurred. 

Officers responded to a collision on Third Street. Both vehicles were drivable afterwards. After the roadway was cleared everyone was sent on their way, and the matter has been referred to Saskatchewan General Insurance.  

EPS platoons and Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan for southeast Saskatchewan conducted blitzes in three intersections: King Street and Petterson Drive, Fourth Street and Ninth Avenue, and 13th Avenue and King Street. Several tickets and inspection orders were issued for Traffic Safety Act infractions.

Officers assisted in the escort of two oversize loads through the city. 

Members are investigating a complaint of a female receiving threatening text messages. The matter is ongoing.

Police received a complaint of a possible impaired driver leaving the city during the June 30 night shift. The driver was located near Bienfait and checked for sobriety. After administering an alcohol test, the driver was found to be sober and subsequently warned about his driving actions.

Officers then received a call about an unwanted patron in a licensed establishment. He did not want to leave when he was asked to do so by the staff. When police arrived on scene he was exiting the business. The subject was warned and sent home with a designated driver.

Police also received reports of fireworks being set off within the city limits.

Officers were called to Cundall Drive during the July 1 day shift for a report of a person lying on the ground. Members attended and located a female who fell and broke her wrist. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) attended and transported her to the hospital.

Members arrested a 17-year-old Estevan male and a 19-year-old Estevan male after a traffic stop in the downtown area during the July 1 night shift. They were on conditions to not have contact with each other, stemming from a previous incident. They will appear in court in August to answer to the new charges.

Officers responded to a complaint of an altercation in the north end. The matter was resolved peacefully and one of the parties left for the evening.

Police responded to a noise complaint above a local lounge. A 19-year-old man from Esterhazy was spoken to and charges of breaching a release condition are pending.

Members are looking into a complaint of uttering threats that came in during July 2 night shift. A former employee threatened to damage a business. The matter is still under investigation.

Officers also responded to a complaint of a bicycle theft. The investigation is ongoing. 

Police received a report of a suspicious male in central Estevan during the July 3 day shift. The individual was not located.

Members then received a call of an individual in north Estevan who was burning refuse.  Police attended, spoke to the homeowner and warned him of the bylaw.

Police attended to a littering complaint in the south end of the city. Individuals were allegedly improperly disposing of cigarette butts. The individuals were warned of possible criminal charges and fines for littering.

Members received a report of a child custody dispute. The matter was resolved.

Police received two separate reports of thefts from the lockers at the Leisure Centre. In both cases, the lockers were unlocked. The matters are still under investigation.
