A 37-year-old Yellow Grass man has been charged with murder in the death of a 33-year-old woman, and made his first court appearance in Regina provincial court on Monday morning.
Kevin Obina Okafor of Yellow Grass is charged with the first degree murder of Abbie Speir of Yellow Grass, one count of flight from a peace officer, and one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The victim and the accused were known to each other.
On Thursday evening around 8:40 p.m., Milestone RCMP along with Fire Services and EMS responded to a complaint of a fire at a residence on Brome Street in Yellow Grass. An adult female was located at the residence and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
After responding to the complaint in Yellow Grass, the RCMP had identified a suspect, along with a description of the white Dodge truck he was driving. RCMP located the truck travelling west on Highway No. 1 near Swift Current.
After police activated emergency equipment, the vehicle failed to stop. With the assistance of the Swift Current and Morse RCMP, a spike belt was successfully deployed.
The vehicle was rendered inoperable and entered the ditch, coming to a stop on its side. The suspect, Kevin Okafor, was uninjured and arrested at the scene, resulting in the additional driving-related offences.
At no point was there any risk or danger to other motorist.
RCMP said investigators are still on the scene at the house in Yellow Grass, as the cause of death and the fire which first brought the police and the fire department are still being investigated. The Regina Forensic Identification Section is assisting with investigating the scene.
